Notes:    (This page takes 36 sec to load at 28.8 baud.)

  1. On this page, I took one of my spider web photos that was a little fuzzy and tried to sharpen it up without distorting the details of the photo.

  2. On these examples, I did use jpg compression, because that is what I would normally do prior to uploading a photo to the web. The exercise is to refine a blurry photo for use, without ruining it. Wink!

Original, unmodified photo
1600 x 1200

This is the original photo. The white box shows the area that I cropped out of it for experimentation purposes.

Cropped 800 x 600 out of original.
800 x 600

This is the cropped section. I did not want to reduce the photo's size at this point, because that would have added more distortion.

Applied sharpen filter one time.
800 x 600

This photo is the result of applying the sharpen filter one time.

Applied sharpen filter twice.
800 x 600

This is the result of applying the sharpen filter twice.

Comparison of original and both modified photos.
1200 x 300
Warning!! Be prepared to wait!

Here's the comparison of all three photos. Original to the left, Sharpen X 1, then Sharpen X 2.

Blowup of comparison detail
800 x 600

Here I cropped out a good example of the detail from each photo for closer inspection. I think the sharpening had the desired effect.

The finished product.
1200 x 900

This is the finished product. I applied sharpen filter twice, tweaked the contrast just a bit, resized from 1600 x 1200 to 1200 x 900, and saved in jpg format with a compression ratio of 35.
